oNe PhOtO a DaY aPrIl 2021:

THE PROMPTS

APRIL 1st THE SKY: all moody and threatening over Rabbit Island Kep’s iconic crab

APRIL 2nd PEOPLE: My favourite little people in Kep. Classes have stopped as all schools are closed due to the latest COVID outbreak but we got to visit the pagoda today

*this photo was actually chosen in the grid for best of the day on both Facebook and Instagram and that's a first for me - the little monks of Kep are becoming social media stars

APRIL 3rd CHAIR: My favourite spot in the living room and a chair I have spent many hours quietly reading in especially over the last few months

APRIL 4th FENCE: We were standing a good three metres back from the fence to get this sunset shot of the water crashing into the sea wall. I simply can’t risk slipping and falling on wet slipper tiles again at this point, though I do love the water droplets obscuring the sun

APRIL 5th FREE CHOICE: A lotus bud in our garden. We finally got a huge pot and planted some lotus in it; something I have dreamed of doing for a long time now. Now the view from our living room includes lotuses.

Today’s prompt was balloon but I don’t have any, didn’t see any and don’t like them due to their environmental impact so give me lotus buds any day

“Just like the lotus we too have the ability to rise from the mud, bloom out of the darkness and radiate into the world”

APRIL 6th SWING: Today is an archive shot of one of the most mischievous of our little monks, who has now left.  He always enjoyed the playtime at the end of the class. This is a flashback to last year before the main hall was finished and he delighted in using the painters’ scaffolds and ropes to swing on

APRIL 7th VEHICLE: I sold my last car in 1989 in the name of a healthier wealthier me and a cleaner greener world, so I’ve been biking it ever since. Never once regretted that decision and I’ve owned and ridden a bike in five of the seven countries I’ve lived in. So glad to be back on the bike and riding again

APRIL 8th A MOOD: Right now, I’m feeling optimistic and hopeful. Maybe just maybe, my old active self is beginning to re-emerge

APRIL 9th A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT: Our after-swimming, homemade mango and dragonfruit smoothie was just that today

APRIL 10th DONUT: They are not really very common here but I did spot these at the local bakery recently. I wasn’t tempted but I did snap a shot

APRIL 11th PICTURE: When your friend the artist, is also a musician, you get this kind of picture as a show of gratitude. A beautiful outdoor space in a dear friend’s home

APRIL 12th MIRROR: A lovely little Buddha reflected in the mirror of my compact

APRIL 13th WATER DROPS: on lotus leaves in our newly established lotus pond after a brief but torrential downpour

APRIL 14th CLEAN: The clean, green simplicity of nature. I can see my next project is going to be to establish a white Waterlily pond to join the lotus pond in the garden

APRIL 15th MONEY: from eight different countries none of which we live in or can travel to anymore! But we will always have a taxi fare downtown when we choose to return

APRIL 16th SPLASH: The splash of water as the waves hit the seawall with the sunset sky as a backdrop. Ocean views Kep style

APRIL 17th NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY: An archive shot, taken on this day, of that iconic NYC skyline taken from Staten Island on our last trip there to celebrate my 60th. I’d go back in a heartbeat

APRIL 18th GRAFFITI: Every colonial ruin in Kep is covered in graffiti but this is my favourite because I ❤️ Kep too

APRIL 19th CRISP: Three out of four of the lotus buds in our pond bloomed but this one got fried to a crisp in the sweltering heat, so I snipped it off and placed it in the hands of Buddha

APRIL 20th PASTA: Definitely the best pasta I have ever eaten was this dish served at the table from a huge round of parmesan cheese. It was a birthday treat and I loved it. Thanks for the memories Terrazza. It’s an archive shot from two years ago

APRIL 21st KISS: The kiss of the sun on my favourite orchid in our garden early this morning

APRIL 22nd SOCKS: The most delightful gift I was given by a dear friend. My special orange compression socks for flying. Can’t wait to use them again. What I particularly like is that they are clearly labeled left and right and I’ve got them on the wrong feet. I never have been good at that LOL

APRIL 23rd MOON: A favourite archive shot of the silhouette of sugar palms against a full moon, taken in our front yard not long after we moved in. With the monsoon looming at the moment the moon is rarely visible through the clouds

APRIL 24th TRIANGLE: Who says sticky coconut chocolate brownies have to be cut into squares? Triangles work just as well and enable those who must choose the biggest piece more scope

APRIL 25th UGLY LOCATION: Now it is past the point of saving but at one time this would once have been a renovator’s dream and far from an ugly location. The times have changed

APRIL 26th FREE CHOICE: We had a chance to visit the pagoda today and catch up with our little monks. We don’t see them so often now that classes have stopped due to the surging numbers of COVID cases in Cambodia. So, this is Ran looking very serene

The actual prompt today is ice cream but I don’t have any and as a result of ever diminishing supplies in the local stores, currently I can’t buy any either so I’m opting for free choice to reflect the activities of the day

APRIL 27th PATH: One of the many lovely little paths through the garden at Yary’s house

APRIL 28th STOP: United in our efforts to stop COVID here in Cambodia and around the globe

APRIL 29th MADE FROM WOOD: The little Bhutanese prayer wheel in the living room is made of wood and brightly painted. We are both fond of giving it a spin in passing and treasure the memories it evokes

APRIL 30th SPIDER WEB: Being somewhat arachnophobic this is an archive shot I tracked down rather than having to take another. I surprised myself by remembering and finding a photo taken in August 2011 in Wamrong. Such is the horror of having to get that close to a spider
